UMG to remove songs from TikTok
Universal Music Group just announced that they will no longer be licensing TikTok music unless they can come to an agreement on fair compensation for the artists and songwriters UMG represents. Songs by Taylor Swift, Oliva Rodrigo, Justin Bieber, Drake, and many other artists will be removed from TikTok by the end of the day today if they do not make a new deal. TikTok is one of the most powerful music discovery platforms, and losing these major artists can be detrimental to the company, as about 60% of TikTok videos contain music.
All UMG properties would likely be affected by this change – including their “independent distributors,” such as Imperial Distribution, Ingrooves, Virgin Music Group, Spinnup, etc.
Too Lost users who deliver their music into TikTok will not experience availability issues. While Too Lost negotiates great royalty rates and cares deeply about artist compensation, we also believe that availability is important. TikTok's promotional capabilities are still vital for breaking independent records. Additionally, with growing concerns of digital piracy, artists should make sure their official versions of songs are always available and licensed on platforms like TikTok. With more music being created now than ever before, artists are at a disadvantage if their music is not available to the 1.5 billion users on TikTok.
