As Black History Month unfolds, we celebrate independent Black artists who are shaping the future of music. Among them is jev., an artist whose global upbringing has deeply influenced his sound. Growing up in Congo, South Africa, and Canada, he developed a unique perspective on music as a universal language—one where rhythm, melody, and beats transcend borders.

In an exclusive Q&A, jev. shares how his experiences shaped his artistry, the message he hopes to pass on to future generations, and the legendary artists he dreams of collaborating with.

How has your upbringing or cultural background shaped your artistry?

"My upbringing was a very unique one. Growing up in three different countries—Congo, South Africa, and Canada—shaped my understanding of the world and my artistry. It taught me that music is universal and that the rhythms, melodies, and beats are the most important parts of a song. This made me pay even more attention to the sounds I use in my music."

What’s one message you hope your music conveys to future generations of Black artists?

"I hope my music passes the message of evolution to future generations. Don’t be afraid to evolve your music and sound. Keep incorporating the sounds and music you heard growing up into your work, making it authentically you."

If you could collaborate with any legendary Black artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

"I would collaborate with the Fugees or Wu-Tang Clan, especially in their prime. They are both some of my biggest inspirations."
