Artist Spotlight

As Black History Month unfolds, the spotlight is on independent Black artists who are shaping the future of music. Among them is Sol ChYld, an emerging talent bringing fresh energy, authenticity, and soulful storytelling to the scene. With smooth production and a distinct sound, she is quickly becoming an artist to watch.

In an exclusive Q&A, Sol ChYld reflects on the influences that have molded her artistry, the message she hopes to pass on to future generations, and the legends she dreams of collaborating with.

How has your upbringing or cultural background shaped your artistry?

"I grew up with a bunch of music enthusiasts (my family). There was a lot of Jazz, Hip Hop, and RnB, but a very memorable moment I have is my mom putting me on to MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill. At that moment, she handed me this metaphorical blueprint of what I could accomplish in rap."

What’s one message you hope your music conveys to future generations of Black artists?

"A lot of my music speaks on the journey to reaching a goal and not stopping until said goal is achieved—the trials and tribulations, the growing pains, and the reroute of having to consistently and continuously learn and find yourself.

The message I hope to give to future generations is 'Stay on the path.' There are obstacles and things sent to sidetrack you, BUT you have to stay on the path."

If you could collaborate with any legendary Black artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

"If I could collaborate with ANY legendary Black artist... I can’t pick just one. So if I can, I’m giving a rapper, singer, and producer—Kendrick Lamar, Lauryn Hill, and J Dilla."

With her powerful storytelling and undeniable passion, Sol ChYld is carving out a space in the industry that is uniquely her own. As she continues her journey, listeners can experience her music and the sounds of other groundbreaking Black artists on the Black History Month playlist on Spotify.
