Artist Spotlight: Renforshort
Toronto native, Renforshort,has been making waves in the music industry since 2016. Renforshort's stage presence developed long before 2012. She spent her youth participating in creative clubs, theater, and performing at open mic nights. Growing up in a musical household and being exposed to artists like Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Nicks left Reforshort with a desire to make music that leaves a lasting impression on the listener.
Renforshort began posting covers of Soundcloud and Youtube in 2015. Foreshadowing her own storytelling and emotional songwriting style, the first cover she posted was “Jealous” by Labrinth. The same year, she met her long-time collaborator Jeff Hazin.
In February 2019, Reforshort released her debut single, “Waves”. The songs carries ethereal vocals and relatable lyricism that speak to the ups and downs of a complicated love. Listeners quickly were captivated by her sound. She followed up this release with the viral hit “Mind Games”. This track went on to be nominated for the 2019 SOCAN Songwriter Prize. By November, the 2 singles amassed over 5 million streams.
Her quick come up was just the beginning for Renforshort considering she has now become one of the leading artists of the alternative pop scene. Each of her releases is a testament to her evolution as an artist as she continues to explore honest storytelling and blending pop and rock elements. This was clear considering her release of ‘Dear Amelia’ in July 2022. In an interview with NME, she stated that this is the kind of candid honesty she would have appreciated while growing up as a young woman.
