Artist Spotlight: Raury
Born and raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia, Raury discovered his passion for music early on. At just 3 years old, he was already mimicking Michael Jackson, and by 8, after listening to 2Pac for the first time, he began writing his own songs. At 15, he wrote and produced his debut project Indigo Child, and at 18, fresh out of high school, he signed a deal with a major record label.
After moving to Atlanta, Raury’s career took off. With a genre-bending sound that blends folk, rap, and electronic music, the multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter quickly stood out – earning praise from Pharrell Williams, Lorde, and Chance the Rapper. Since then, he has appeared on the Billboard 200, opened for Macklemore, and been featured on several albums.
But after feeling creatively restrained by his label, Raury made the decision to walk away and return to being an independent artist. Since then, he’s released several critically acclaimed projects, like Strawberry Moon, that reflect his artistic vision and beliefs more authentically.
His latest release, BONFYE, dropped on Juneteenth and serves as a spiritual call to humanity, confronting the oppression faced by minorities. It’s also the first of many singles set to lead into the long-awaited sequel Indigo Child 2.
Raury has already shown the world his creative brilliance, but now, embracing his freedom as an independent artist, he proves that when paired with passion and authenticity, independence can be one of the greatest tools. And with a loyal fanbase by his side, his next chapter is one we’re all waiting for.
