Artist Spotlight: NorthsideBenji
Toronto rapper, NorthsideBenji, has quickly become one of Canada’s most promising hip-hop talents. Hailing from Brampton, Ontario, Benji first burst onto the scene in 2016, releasing freestyles that quickly gained traction and amassed tens of thousands of fans.
One of his earliest successes came with his 2017 track "Left Hollywood," a compelling take on Meek Mill's hit, which showcased Benji’s unique style and storytelling ability. His talent soon caught international attention, leading to a memorable 2018 appearance on BBC Radio 1's Fire in the Booth, where his freestyle over 21 Savage's "Bank Account" and Fugees' "Ready or Not" earned him a strong overseas fan base.
2019 marked a pivotal year in NorthsideBenji's career with the release of his debut project, Caviar Dreams. The project features his breakout single "Levels," a duet with Toronto rapper and close friend Houdini. This track, certified Gold by Music Canada, captures the essence of Benji’s journey from the streets to a life of luxury—reflecting the project's overarching theme.
Later that year, Benji dropped his second EP, Frienemy, further solidifying his position in the rap game. The luxury-themed music video for the title track resonated with fans, racking up over a million views.
Continuing to evolve as an artist, Benji's most recent single, "Running Game," is a testament to his growth and increasingly melodic sound. The track reflects his maturation and solidifies his place as a versatile artist who is here to stay.
Benji's growing influence extends beyond Canada, with notable collaborations, including features on UK rap superstar Nines' chart-topping album Crabs in a Bucket. With his consistent output and authentic voice, Northside Benji continues to be a significant figure in the global hip-hop scene, representing the next wave of Toronto's rap talent.
