Artist Spotlight: Malik Elijah
Malik Elijah is an innovative alternative hip-hop artist based in Boston. His passion for music ignited at the age of four when his father taught him how to play the drums. Growing up in a religious household, Malik’s early exposure to hip-hop and R&B was limited. However, his discovery of Christian rap opened the door to a deep love for hip-hop. It wasn’t long before he and his brother were driving home from school singing every word to Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Flight School’ mixtape.
In 2017, Malik Elijah took his first significant step into the music world by releasing a self-produced album on SoundCloud. This marked the beginning of a career characterized by a steady stream of singles and albums spanning diverse styles.
By 2022, he released his project called “DETOUR,” garnering widespread acclaim. Over half of the songs feature collaborations, a deliberate choice by Malik. His vision was to bring diverse artists together for the first time to see how they sounded together.
More recently, Malik released his 8-track project, “SONIT.” The album was a work in progress for three years, going through several iterations until he felt satisfied with the final songs. Unlike “DETOUR,” this is an almost entirely solo body of work. His goal was to make an album that sounded like something he would want to listen to while smoking or on night drives – and that’s exactly how it turned out.
Malik Elijah is evolving with every new song he releases, and he has no plans of slowing down. His versatility in the hip-hop scene makes him an artist that resonates with many people.
