Artist Spotlight

Somewhere between laid back funk, hardcore rap, and alternative rock the genre bending music of Genesis Owusu falls. For Owusu, pursuing the truth of the present moment is an unrelenting artistic goal. Despite the distinct elements of funk and hip-hop that permeate his music, it remains difficult to neatly classify. He identifies Jimi Hendrix and Frank Ocean as some of his key inspirations.

In 2021, the singer-songwriter gained prominence with his audacious and occasionally punk-influenced album "Smiling With No Teeth," solidifying his reputation as an artist who was unlike any other.  The album, which marked his debut, peaked at number 27 on the ARIA charts and went on to win several awards, including ARIA Award for Album of the Year and Australian Music Prize.

In an interview with NME magazine, Owusu describes his most recent release “Hole Heart,” as a poignant and emotionally charged experience. While Owusu aimed to capture the pervasive sentiments of the past few years, including the sense of urgency and despair, he also emphasizes the need to push forward and overcome these challenges.
