Artist Spotlight

Afrobeats is a genre known for its diversity, blending trap, soul, R&B, and dancehall. In this scene, Fido stands out, mixing the genre's foundations with his own Afrofusion style. Born Awosika Olayemi Josiah in Matogun, Ogun State, Fido’s journey began in his local church choir, where his passion for music took shape.

Raised by a single mother, Fido's path from a small town to the Afrobeats stage is marked by resilience and ambition. Influenced by the beats of Olamide and Kizz Daniel and the messages of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, he has crafted a style that defies expectations.

Fido’s debut single, "Awolowo," quickly gained attention, earning over 22,000 Shazams in under a week and reaching the #1 spot on Nigeria's Spotify Top 50 charts. Released in August 2024, "Awolowo" is more than just a song—it’s a statement. Created with his collaborator Iykeelvis, the track pays homage to Ikoyi’s Awolowo Road, serving as an ode to finding calm in chaos and embracing youth.

Iykeelvis recalls, “The track started as a demo for a freestyle video, but one evening, a bassline sparked the magic. Fido, who was gaming at the time, immediately connected with it and crafted a vibe in just moments.”

For Fido, "Awolowo" is just the beginning. This debut track sets the stage for a forthcoming EP that will explore his journey and the sacrifices he has made to pursue music. With "Awolowo" as his introduction, Fido is on track to become one of Afrobeats' most interesting new voices.
